I am so thankful to you, the co-owners of TRM, for the opportunity to serve on our Board of Directors for the past 5 years and as the Board Chair the past year. It has been my sincere pleasure to be part of such a continually dynamic, excellent team.
Truly, I love The Co-op. It is a place that has meant “community” to me since 1997. I love being a part of democratic organization that is working to make our local and regional environment, people, and community healthier. I love the trust I feel walking through the front doors, with regards to our Product Standards, and I am proud to be part of an organization with such progressive Employment Policies. Three Rivers Market experienced significant unanticipated sales growth during Fiscal Year (FY) 2019-2020 that accelerated with the onset of the pandemic in our region. The superb managers and staff adapted to an unprecedented operational challenge with the ingenuity, fortitude, and unwavering commitment that over the years have established Three Rivers Market as a cornerstone of our community, an exemplary leader among food co-ops, and, now, a model in the provision of essential services in the midst of a public health crisis. This has resulted in a surplus that also can be attributed to the strong support of members who have demonstrated gratitude and concern for the staff and respectful compliance with policies.

During the week of June 8th, several Board members attended the virtual Consumer Cooperative Management Association (CCMA) conference. Jacqueline Arthur, General Manager of Three Rivers Market, presented in a session titled “Successful Food Co-ops: Thriving in a Post-COVID World.” Other topics covered during the conference were e-commerce, responding to an economic downturn, adaptive governance, and diversity and inclusion.
We were thrilled for our General Manager to share the many effective practices Three Rivers Market has implemented in response to the pandemic with conference attendees representing food co-ops across the country. We also heard from many others who are approaching the global health crisis and racial justice movement in innovative, thoughtful, impactful ways that have strengthened not only their co-ops, but their greater local communities. We look forward to discussing these ideas further at our fall retreat in October.
