Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO)

Genetic engineering is a biotechnology technique that creates new organisms through gene-splicing. This relatively new science allows DNA from one species to be injected into another species in a laboratory, creating combinations of plant, animal, bacteria, and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods. The FDA does not currently regulate GMOs, nor does it require any mandatory health or environmental labeling or testing of these foods. Due to concern that the development and release of genetically engineered ingredients has progressed rapidly with inadequate oversight, scant safety testing, and minimal public debate, Three Rivers Market gives preference to products without GMO and labeled as such.
