With a new year comes new opportunities, new ways to grow, and of course new Board members. The beginning of 2021 brought with it the commencement of my service on the TRM Board of Directors. I’m delighted in the prospect of serving TRM’s members and our community. However, before and during the election process, I was quite apprehensive. Could I be a helpful addition to the Board? Do I have the appropriate knowledge and skill sets? I appreciate local, community-minded businesses and TRM’s commitment to the Cooperative Principles, but Policy Governance and Robert’s Rules are subjects where my knowledge was lacking. My first thought was that other, more capable members should run. Not me. After I received multiple emails and letters urging qualifying members to consider running for TRM’s Board, I convinced myself. I chose to run for the TRM Board of Directors because I appreciate the values that are upheld by TRM and believe that I should strive to sustain such ethics in our Co-op and our community.
I’m thankful for the inclusivity and guidance that have been extended by TRM’s Board of Directors, General Manager, and members. Additionally, I’m pleased to note that our Co-op endeavors to properly train new board members in order to aptly serve our members and our community. New Board member training is led by Columinate, a national consulting cooperative experienced in developing food cooperatives. Since being elected to TRM’s Board of Directors, I have attended Columinate’s CBL 101-Foundations for Board Governance and Financial Training for Directors. The information and tools provided during these seminars have allowed me to become more comfortable in my role as a TRM Director.
Although the new year has just begun, it’s never too late to plan for the future. Regardless of your previous experience, don’t let the possibility of running for TRM’s Board of Directors intimidate you. If you’re an eligible member and value a healthier environment, healthier people, and a healthier community, I strongly encourage you to run for TRM’s 2022 Board of Directors. If you’re interested in learning more, members are always welcome to attend the monthly Board meetings held the second Thursday of each month from 6:30pm-8:30pm. Currently, Board meetings are being held virtually. To request an invite to the virtual meeting, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
