PRODUCE NEWS

If you need some extra nutrients in a “pinch,” microgreens are packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Consuming them helps boost immunity and lower blood pressure. They have also been shown to reduce inflammation, manage Type 2 diabetes, and improve cognitive health due to high polyphenol levels.

The Produce Department is honored to offer a wide range of delicious microgreens from Little Row Farms. Grab some today!

Have you heard the buzz surrounding hydroxyapatite?  It is an ingredient that is trending in oral care products.

Hydroxyapatite is a naturally occurring calcium phosphate mineral that is considered a safe and effective alternative to fluoride.

Hydroxyapatite has been proven to remineralize and repair enamel as well as to reduce tooth sensitivity by filling in the gaps and irregularities on the surface of teeth.

Three Rivers Market offers a couple of different brands that contain this noteworthy ingredient, the first being David’s toothpastes which come in two flavors – peppermint and orange vanilla.

The other line of hydroxyapatite containing products is Nathan & Sons Underbrush remineraling gum.  Not only do these chewing gums contain hydroxyapatite but they also contain all-natural mastic, chicle, spruce, myrrh and acacia gums in addition to xylitol and other oral health enhancing ingredients.  Nathan & Sons remineralizing gum is available in four flavors: Mastic Mint, Berry, Cinna-Mastic and Honey Bun.

MARCH’S
NOURISHING CHANGE

In March we will be collecting change to help support Friends of Literacy.Friends of Literacy empowers families in Knox county and surrounding communities through accessible programs to support early literacy and healthy childhood development.

In East Tennessee there is one book among every 300 households experiencing poverty. Research confirms the correlation between childhood poverty, lack of access to reading resources, lower reading proficiency, and the resulting struggle to complete high school and prepare for the world beyond.

By supporting early literacy we are supporting a financially stable future which can also be correlated with a decrease in food insecurity leading to healthier individuals, homes and communities.

 Objective:

To raise $7,000. Friends of Literacy plans to open the first free community bookstore in Knoxville this year. Funds Nourishing Change will go to support costs for this effort. These include supplying books, literacy support materials, and staff time needed to make the bookshop a success.

Our next Board meeting is scheduled for April 9th at 6:30pm. If you plan to attend, please register by 3pm the day prior to the meeting. In the meantime, the Board is working to identify members willing to serve on the Board of Directors.
