New Vendor: Special Growers

In 2010, a few parents of special needs young adults were hit with a question, “What’s next for my child after high school graduation?” Unfortunately, the answer was, “there really isn’t much.”

Special Growers was launched to provide a work opportunity for their children and other adults with special needs. With the support of many community partners and individuals, a safe and inclusive work environment has been developed for our disabled staff to learn job skills, gain confidence, and prepare for their future careers.

Today, Special Growers employs 40 year-round disabled staff, 2 garden managers, and 14 dedicated volunteers. With these talented team members, we work hard to harvest, prep, and deliver fresh herbs and fresh cut flowers

Three Rivers is honored to carry herbs and edible flowers from Special Growers. Check them out today!

You may have seen our NEW signs:
‘Last Day Products – 50% OFF!

What do these mean?

In an effort to minimize waste as much as possible, we have decided to reduce the cost
of all products that are on their last day of best shelf quality before being pulled.

These goods are NOT expired. They may not be our freshest batch, but they are just as deserving to be enjoyed!

What about the items that still don’t get picked up? Three Rivers Market cares about that too! Any items that are left over in bakery are donated to our staff
and allocated donation partners.

Humble Brands

Plastics are everywhere!  From plastic waste in our oceans and rivers to microplastics being found inside of clouds and our brains…plastics are inescapable.

But that doesn’t mean that concerned individuals can’t take steps to reduce their plastic footprints.  Storing food and leftovers in ceramic or glass containers instead of single use storage bags is a good place to start as is bringing cloth or reusable totes to the store to haul your groceries home.

In addition, our Wellness department strives to provide a variety of plastic free body care options to help break free from our polymer dependency.  These items include deodorants, toothpaste tablets, shampoos, conditioners, soaps, face washes and balms.

One product line that offers an array of plastic free deodorants is Humble Brands.  Packaged in paperboard and emblazoned with stylish graphics inspired by the high desert landscape of Taos, New Mexico where the company is located, these deodorants are crafted using simple, aluminum-free ingredients.

Three Rivers Market recently added an enticing new scent of Humble deodorant to our shelves.

The Rockrose & Cedar formula was created in collaboration with Jason Momoa who is a native of Hawaii and an ocean advocate in addition to being an actor in Game of Thrones and Aquaman.

The Rockrose & Cedar scent is warm and resinous with sweet, smoky and spicy notes.  A percentage of every purchase of the Rockrose & Cedar deodorant goes to support the Ocean Defenders Alliance, a non-profit organization that removes man-made debris and plastic from our oceans.

JUNE’S
NOURISHING CHANGE

In June we will be collecting change to help support Beardsley Farm.

Beardsley Farm’s mission is to work toward a healthier community in Knoxville by providing culturally relevant produce donations, accessible education, and access to land and resources for gardening.

Objective:

To raise $7,000 to go toward a paid summer internship program. This program’s goal is to create opportunities to learn to farm using sustainable practices on an urban farm that promotes food access to the community.

There are noticeable gaps in paid opportunities and platforms for the Knoxville community to learn about growing food and Beardsley Farm would like to bridge that gap.

Beardsley’s hope is to create a more diverse pool of participants through paid internship opportunities, which will allow for individuals from a variety of financial backgrounds to be able to afford to spend their summers helping and learning at the farm.

This month the Board would like to share with members the details of our 4th Annual Member Picnic, and invite you to consider taking part in the governance of our co-op by running for the Board.
