NEW IN PRODUCE!

3 Pajaritos and Care of the Earth Community Farm were created by and are run by Megan and Lalo Allen-Lazaro.Megan was born and raised in east Tennessee and has farmed organically for over twenty years, and Lalo grew up farming and returned to farming when they started Care of the Earth Community Farm in 2009. The 3 pajaritos are their son Evan, ther daughter Eila, and their youngest son Elias.

The Allen-Lazaros are some of the only independent farmers in the Southeast adapting Certified Organic, open-pollinated, heirloom, and open-source seed to our uniquely difficult climate and breeding disease-resistant open-pollinated varieties selected specifically for this region.

They hope to help turn the tide against corporate, patented seed that ignores our region’s (changing) climate, reduces the viability of regional farms, and takes away the right of ordinary people to save their own seed.

TRM is delighted to be carrying seeds for the growing season from Care of the Earth Community Farm priced at $5.50 per pack. They will be available in the produce section beginning in February!

Their vibrant, unique packaging helps to make these chocolates the perfect present for your sweetie or yourself!

In keeping with the theme of Valentine’s Day, February is American Heart Month.

This effort is aimed at raising awareness of heart disease which is the leading cause of death in the U.S.  Diet, exercise and managing blood pressure all play a crucial role in maintaining heart health.

One dietary compound with proven cardiovascular benefits is omega-3 fatty acids.  These healthy fats are found in certain fish including sardines, salmon and mackerel as well as in plant sources like walnuts, flax seeds and chia seeds.  Omega-3 improves heart health by lowering triglycerides, reducing blood pressure and decreasing inflammation in the arteries.  In other words, omega-3’s are a powerhouse of nutrition that we should all be incorporating into our diets.

Three Rivers Market offers an array of products containing omega-3’s such as wild caught Alaskan salmon in our Meat department, various fish and algal oil supplements in our Wellness department, chia and flax seeds in our Bulk department, and high quality tinned sardines and mackerel in our Grocery department.

Three Rivers Market cares about our community and supports you on your path to optimal health.

The co-op’s Little Library now has a permanent home outside on our patio.

Take a book home with you or feel free to sit down for a good read with your lunch!

FEBRUARY’S
NOURISHING CHANGE

In February we will be collecting change to help support Feed-A-Pet.The Feed-A-Pet program is an initiative of the Community Action Committee (CAC) Office on Aging that supports limited-income older adults in caring for their pet companions. Through donations and volunteer efforts, they provide monthly deliveries of pet food and other essentials.

Feed-A-Pet provides about 3,800 pounds of pet food to 129 seniors and their pets each month.

Feed-A-Pet aligns with Three River Market’s goal of a healthier environment, healthier people, and a healthier community by ensuring that eligible seniors have the pet food they need each month to care for their pets.

By doing so, seniors can keep their companions in their homes, reducing loneliness, anxiety, stress, and blood pressure.

 Objective:

To raise $7,000. These funds will be used to help Feed-A-Pet purchase the pet food needed.

At the close of last year, the Three Rivers Market Board said goodbye to three Directors who reached the end of their terms – Caitlin Seidler, Brian Williams, and Fred Stephens.

To inspire and encourage your co-op shopping, here’s a recipe where every ingredient is available at the Three Rivers Market!

I invite other members to contribute!

For this recipe, I really enjoy going to the co-op’s bulk spices shelves and measuring the spices out of the glass jars into the little bags, getting just enough for what I need, breathing in the fragrance as I go, which begins in the store and continues in my kitchen.

Find the full recipe here .

The Agenda for the regular monthly meetings is posted at least one week before each meeting on the co-op’s website.

To request that an item be considered for the Board’s agenda, members can either email the request to
board@threeriversmarket.coop or leave a note for the Chair at the Member & Customer Services Desk at the store. Requests must be dated and include name, member number, phone number, email address, or other reliable contact information needed for follow-up.

The deadline for submitting items to the Chair for consideration is four weeks prior to the scheduled meeting.
